Information of interest to all of the members:

Dave Robinson was the representative from our district to the International Council on Legislation.  In his summary were found some items of particular importance and interest  to the membership of our club:

  • ... The club board can cancel a club meeting for commonly recognized holidays.  (We have apparently been doing this for major holidays without the blessing of RI).
  • ...  Club members are required to attend or make up 50% rather than 60% of regular meetings in each half of the Rotary year.   (This doubtless reflects the fact that so many Rotarians are on the move and mobile in this time and age).
  • ...  Rotaractors who have ended their Rotaract membership within the preceding two years and have been accepted into a Rotary club are exempt from paying a club admission fee.  (This may have future ramifications since one of our goals is to begin a Rotaract Club in Stanwood h.s.).
  • ...  Clubs can elect into active membership people with good reputations in the community who have demonstrated a commitment to service and the Object of Rotary through personal involvement in local affairs.  (This can have huge implications for our membership efforts.  Formerly, membership in Rotary was limited to executives and business owners.  Now the gates are opened to other fine persons who cannot be described by the former membership criteria).
  • ...  A district can only belong to one zone.  (This seems innocent enough until you realize that our district 5050 bridges two zones by being half in Canada and half in the U. S. - some say that is the reason for our 5050 designation.  The Resolution is currently under serious review due to the fact that not only our district but numerous others will be impacted.  If enforced, there will be a significant restructuring of our district with all of the clubs in our district being in the one zone with no Canadian clubs included).

We will closely monitor these developments, particularly the last one cited above.

Respectfully submitted,

JoAnn and Dave Lipscomb
