Our speaker today was Thoma Dorival, a young man from Cap Haitian, Haiti in the Dominican Republic. Mr. Dorival, at the age of seven years came to live in a Christian Orphanage with approximately 100 other homeless children. He is now 28 years of age. His Mother, two brothers, and five sisters live in Haiti.
In May, 2005, Mr. Dorival graduated from Limbe University outside of Cap Haitian. As a result of a four year struggle and through the tireless effort of Mich Michl, a Pastor responsible for missions at Camano Chapel, Thoma is in the USA on an educational Visa for 2 years, and will be attending the Language and Culture Institute in Lake Oswego, Or. and from there will be attending Multnomah Biblical Seminary in Portland. Mr. Dorival will be going back to Cap Haitian, and through an organization called IDADEE, will help build an Orphanage for the many homeless children. This organization has a dream to provide a clean, reputable, loving environment that will teach and train orphaned children. The organization has recently purchased a seven acre piece of property outside of Cap Haitian and construction has begun on the project. Because of Thoma's unique upbringing, he has the desire to touch the lives of other orphaned children and instill values, and the education to allow them a bright promising future. Mr. Dorival touched on the political challenges faced by his people, HIV/AIDS, life expectancy, lack of educational opportunities, the Challenges of employment, and the high mortality rate. His dream, desire, and goal is to make a positive change for his people. He fielded a number of challenging questions from Rotarians and guests.
