Stanwood Camano Students of the Month
June 2009

Destiny Redform and Chad Beidas were named the June Rotary Club Students of the Month. Both students attend Stanwood Elementary. Students are selected through a competitive process based on multiple factors including academic progress, activities and overall academic plans at each of the Stanwood Camano School District’s schools. Both students were strong selections according to Stanwood Elementary Principal, Victor Hanzeli.
Destiny Redform is a fourth grade student and a resident of Stanwood. Destiny is extremely involved in activities and is passionate about PE, school plays, soccer, dance, 4-wheelers and playing with animals. Destiny’s passion for animals is directing her towards considering a career as a veterinarian. “I’m a good person and a good student thanks to my family, my teachers and my school,” she said.
Chad Beidas is a fifth grade student and also a resident of Stanwood. Chad’s favorite subjects are math, science and history while his hobbies include horseback riding and karate. “I’ve learned so much at school besides math and science,” he explained to the Rotary Club, “I have learned how to be a better person.” Chad has been inspired to consider a career as a surgeon so he is able to volunteer internationally to help children in nations where medical care is lacking.
“Both of these youth are true assets to our community”, said Jim Jonson president of the Rotary Club, “We should all be proud of them and those that support their efforts to become well-rounded adults prepared for our region’s future.”

Miya McLaughlin and Riley Mitchell were named the May Rotary Club Students of the Month. Both students are 5th grade students at Cedarhome Elementary. Students are selected through a competitive process based on multiple factors including academic progress, activities and overall academic plans at each of the Stanwood Camano School District’s schools.
Both students were strong selections according to Cedarhome’s Principal, Jeff Lofgren. “Both students turn in their work on-time, every time and are well respected in their classroom,” he explained, “during the selection process we read through the criteria and both of these students immediately were at the top of our list.” Both Miya and Riley are in the same classroom which is rare for this program since students from throughout the school compete for the distinction.
Miya McLaughlin of Stanwood is the daughter of Irna and Chris McLaughlin. Miya is extremely involved in school activities including choir and student council. Her focus and dedication has earned her an orange belt in karate and placement in the Young Authors program at Skagit Valley College. Miya loves art and plans to pursue the field of speech pathology after graduating high school.
Riley Mitchell of Stanwood is the son of Paula and Scott Mitchell. Riley is active with camping, fishing and basketball and serves our community as a crossing guard.
